In the beginning …
The Club was founded at a meeting held in the Band Hall on Wednesday 4th February ‘59. The Club was registered as St Fintan’s AC but would later change to Ballyfin AC.
The first Committee were: President – Rev Fr Flanagan, Chairman – Felix Bennett, Vice Chairman – Lar Fitzpatrick, Treasurer – Michael Daly and Secretary – Vincent Hogan. The committee were backed up by an enthusiastic group, including Owen Heffernan, Charlie O’Rourke, Joe Behan, Jim Quinn, Mick Duly and Sam Dunne.
The Membership Fee back then was only 2 Shillings for Senior Members and 1 Shilling for Juveniles.
The first major fund raising venture was a Dance in the Coliseum Ballroom featuring the debut of Brendan Boyer with the Royal Showband. This raised £300.00 which was a considerable fortune in those days. And as they say, it was onwards and upwards after that.
